At approx. 2000 on June 12 the
Wattsburg Hose Company was dispatched for a tanker
rollover with fire and explosion, plus possible
entrapment. Enroute, the first arriving Chief
observed a large black header and requested
additional engines and tankers from adjoining
companies. On arrival the IC reported a tanker off
the roadway engulfed in flames with the driver
already extricated by bystanders. The driver
sustained 1st and 2nd degree burns. He was taken to
Hamot Hospital and then flown to West Penn Burn
Center in Pittsburgh.
With the close proximity of
French Creek the fire companies contained the 8,000
gallon gasoline fire and decided to let the fire
burn itself out so as not to create excess runoff.
Clean up crews took control of
the scene at approx 0100 and finished
debris removal at 1100 on June 13. Soil
contamination was more extensive than originally
thought so cleanup is taking longer than expected.
The Wattsburg Hose Company was
assisted by the following volunteer departments:
Kuhl Hose Co., Greenfield VFD, Fuller Hose Co.,
Union City VFD, Elgin VFD, and Belle Valley VFD.
County EMA, Erie County HazMat and the DEP were also
onscene
