Station 17 was dispatched for a reported tanker rollover, on fire. 170,
Chief Norm Martin, arrived on scene to find one tanker on its its side,
no fire, no entrapment, 1 Class 3 patient. The vehicle is a fifth wheel
tanker, loaded with 7600 gallons of diesel fuel. There was no apparent
breach to the tanker. Engine 172, Tender 173, Squad 176 responded to the
scene. Elgin-Beaverdam Hose Company Engine 1 and Tanker 6 were requested
to the scene. Union City was placed on standby for Engine 1132 and Squad

County Hazardous Materials Response Team was requested to the scene.
Elgin A-5 transported the driver BLS to the Trauma
Center with non life-threatening injuries.
Due to the extended time frame of the incident, the
Wattsburg Area Emergency Management Agency (EMA), opened the Emergency
Operations Center (EOC) at the Wattsburg Hose Company Social Hall at the
request of Chief Norm Martin.
Elgin was requested to stage on the southeast side of
the incident, since Wattsburg apparatus were unable to reach that side
of the scene without an extended response. Wattsburg apparatus staged on
the northeast side. The Erie County HazMat team arrived on scene for
assistance.
Fire Police from Wattsburg closed the roadway at the
intersection of Route 8 and Route 89 south. Fire Police from Elgin
closed the roadway at Route 89 and Route 6. Fire Police from Union City
secured the intersection at Route 89 and Hayes Rd.
Several crews from United Refining arrived to offload
the tanker. It was necessary to perform a hot-tap. Four holes were cut
into the side of the tanker to remove the fuel without causing a leak.
Union City 1132 and 1138 were requested to the scene to
relieve Wattsburg crews for warm-up and rehab.
After the fuel tanker was emptied, the Fire
Suppression, Rescue Crews, HazMat, and Command moved back to the EOC for
staging. Fire Police remained on scene to keep the roadway closed.
Crews battled cold weather, heavy winds, whiteout
conditions, slippery roads, rain, sleet, and snow.
Once the tanker was cleared from the roadway, all units
were placed in service. Many thanks to the following
